Compressor stall: The compressor blade on the right is in stalled condition.
A condition in which the compressor blades stall as the relative airflow meets the blades beyond the critical angle. This can happen at start-up, during rapid acceleration from low RPM, or during a sudden reduction of mass airflow, when a few or all the stages of compressor blades can stall. A compressor stall can also take place during maneuvers as a result of airflow interference in the intake, especially at high angles of attack and low forward speeds. When only a few blades stall, some fluttering or rumbling sounds are heard. However, if the compressor disc stalls, a loud explosive sound is heard followed by a decay in engine RPM and a rapid rise in exhaust gas temperatures. A compressor stall may result in flameout.
