A typical cross-feed cock. In ‘NORM' position all pumps are energized. ‘AFT' position energizes pumps in the aft tank, opens cross-feed valve and transfers fuel to the engine and forward tank. Selection of switch to ‘FORWARD' position energizes the pump in the forward tank, opens cross-feed valve and transfers fuel to the engine and aft tank.

That way, you've verified that cross-feed and/or the other tank position works, but have already selected the takeoff tank before the next engine start.
The unique feature of the test setup is that the capability of performing test under both multipass (continuous overlapping) and single-pass (nonoverlapping) wear tracks, which is realized by means of a cross-feed. With the single-pass wear track the polymer contact surface always interacts with fresh abrasives; hence the uncertainty caused by rolling of abrasives, clogging of wear debris on the abrasive paper, and breakage of abrasives is negligible.
The very brief instructions (less than a half typewritten page) that came with the Brand X receiver recommend using a drill press and a compound cross-feed vise to remove the insert material.
The correct circumference equal to of the circle inscribed into the original contour results from the properly chosen cross-feed motion.
We turned on all the fuel-tank pumps, even in the empty tanks, and opened the fuel cross-feed. We had been over the end of runway every time; we just hadn't been able to see it.
