A device that converts voltages to digital form; examples include analog-to-digital converters, pulse-code modulators, encoders, and quantizing encoders.

(2) An umbrella term for devices that convert analog signals to digital. For example, products are available to transform vinyl records, audio cassettes, 35mm slides and VHS tapes into digital formats. See USB turntable, cassette ripping, slide scanner and VHS ripping.
