directional reciprocity(ANTHROPOLOGY) a generalized pattern of social EXCHANGE (e.g. the exchange of women as brides) between families, groups, etc. in which the exchange is not direct, so that A may give to B, who in turn gives to C, who completes the circle by giving to A.
