At YP, which is in the downwind area, observation data from the micro rain radar (MRR; Metek) and a PARSIVEL
disdrometer (PARSIVEL; OTT Hydromet) were used.
In addition, an optical
disdrometer, OTT Parsivel, is used to measure the rain rates which operates simultaneously with the monitoring system of satellite beacon signal whose specification is also given in Table 2.
Majority of the established DSD functions used
disdrometer recordings [5-9].
Generally, the measured rain drop size distribution N([D.sub.j]) from the
disdrometer data is the number of raindrops per cubic meter per millimetre diameter ([mm.sup.-3][m.sup.-1]) as adopted by [24,25] is given as (1):

disdrometer and profiler measurements.
In addition to standard rain gauges and wind instruments, the mobile laboratory carries a vertically pointing Doppler radar and a video
disdrometer, designed and built by Joanneum Research in Austria, and one of only three of its kind in the United States.
Students can work with its two-dimensional sonic anemometer and an acoustic rain gauge with reporting modes, including tipping bucket accumulation and
disdrometer size counts.

Joss and Waldvogel may be credited as having developed the first automatic
disdrometer, using a microphonic sensor which transformed the vertical momentum of the impact of a drop into an electrical signal [32, 33].
The Joss-Waldvogel
disdrometer set up at the centre is connected to a terminal computer which records 1-minute integration time data.
