The literature contains few detailed descriptions of the ectethmoid in Neomorphinae (Shufeldt, 1901; Pycraft, 1903).
The Neomorphinae is more similar to the other terrestrial cuckoos (Crotophaginae and Centropodinae) mainly in the ectethmoid and lacrimal bones, and in the frontal region.
Axis 2 is heavily weighted positively to more slender humerus and broader cranium and negatively to larger lateral ectethmoid foramen and longer postorbital process.
