a genus of annual or perennial herbs of the family Papaveraceae. The stems and the ternately dissected leaves are bluish green. The solitary flowers are on long peduncles and have a yellow or reddish orange corolla. There are from eight to ten species (or more than 120 subspecies), distributed in the dry western regions of North America, primarily in California. The California poppy (E. californica), an annual ornamental, has many forms and varieties.
