Aircraft designed to intercept, engage in air combat, and shoot down other aircraft. The term also includes fighter-bombers. Fighter-bombers can carry and deliver air-to-surface weapons and defend themselves, although their maneuverability may be somewhat less than that of air-superiority fighters.
