WASTE TREATMENT PLANTS traditionally dewater sludge by pouring it onto sand beds to let the water drain out, or by putting it through filter presses to squeeze out the water.
Sludge dragged out of wet arresters from sand plant and shakeout dust control systems can contain very high levels of active clay and even with high-performance filter presses, the pressed cake cannot be dried to better than about 6070% solids content.
