flight data recorder

A device that records automatically flight data, such as air speed, altitude, load factor, control movement, and position of various controls. The recording device has a time limitation for which it can record data, after which it overwrites. Also called data recorder and black box (it is painted in distinctive orange or yellow color). A flight data recorder is housed in a crash and fireproof container. See data recorder.
