forward extrusion

[¦fȯr·wərd ik′strü·zhən]
(metallurgy)
A cold extrusion process in which a formed blank is placed in a die cavity and struck by a punch; the metal is extruded through an annular space between the die and the end of the punch, moving in the same direction as the punch.

This means that at small-gap widths (h), the lateral extrusion stops at a certain point, and the forward extrusion is predominant during the process.

This forward extrusion analysis illustrates the increased ability of LLNL's NIKE2D code to simulate severe strain in ductile metals.
The usual forming stages are: reducing, forward extrusion, backward extrusion, upset, and trimming and piercing.
For example, if the simultaneous forward and backward extrusions do not go well in the third stage, the forward extrusion can be left in the third stage, and the backward extrusion can be done in the fourth stage.
