Diffuse astrocytomas (WHO grade II), which include fibrillary astrocytoma, gemistocytic astrocytoma
, and protoplasmic astrocytoma, affect primarily young adults and have a tendency for malignant progression to anaplastic astrocytoma and, ultimately, GBM.
Although gemistocytes may be found in all grades of astrocytoma (II, III, and IV), gemistocytic astrocytoma
is currently recognized as a distinct variant only of diffuse astrocytoma (WHO grade II).
