Four cases of puffer fish poisoning in Minneapolis, Minnesota, resulted from consumption of dried globefish
. Toxin analysis showed the product to be highly contaminated with tetrodotoxin, and a DNA analysis identified the fish as Lagocephalus lunaris, which is not allowed for import because naturally occurring toxin in its meat make safe preparation of this species impossible.

Last year was again an excellent one for farmed salmon producers, according to Globefish. Demand was good in most markets but the real explanation was on the supply side with only a modest increase in total farmed salmon production.
The outlook for 2007 remains good, according to Globefish. Norway's output is estimated to increase somewhat whereas Chile's prospects are still uncertain, depending on whether the production problems can be brought under control.
The Globefish report details figures by species and country.
Copies of the report are available from the FAO Globefish Fishery Industries Division, Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, 00100, Rome, Italy, fax: 39-657-055188.
Published by Globefish, the division's research arm, the study documents Europe's increasing dependence on Latin America, Africa and Asia for species like hake, tuna, shark and dogfish, shrimp and cephalopods.
Moving on the specific categories, Globefish makes the following observations:
Fish and seafood is shown as the largest category, at 256,700 tons - and that jibes with a figure of 260,000 tons reported by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's Globefish
Research Program (see QFFI, July 1991, page 86).
Frozen fish products represented some 22% of the 1.18 million metric tons of seafood consumed in Spain during 1988, according to a report recently published by the FAO Globefish
Last year production of farm-raised species reached 650,000 metric tons, accounting for around 26% of total volume, according to Jochen Hannes Nierentz, a fishery industry officer with Globefish
, a division of the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
