ground clutter

ground clutter

[′grau̇nd ‚kləd·ər]
(electromagnetism)
Clutter on a ground or airborne radar due to reflection of signals from the ground or objects on the ground. Also known as ground flutter; ground return; land return; terrain echoes.

ground clutter

ground clutter
An unwanted pattern produced on a radarscope caused by returns from the ground. This can degrade radar in that particular area where clutter is present. The effect of ground clutter can be minimized by use of MTI, or moving target indicator, circuits in the radar equipment, resulting in a radar presentation that displays only targets that are in motion. Echoes from the sea are called sea clutter or sea return.

Many times, ground clutter will be characterized by negative [Z.sub.DR] since many ground clutter targets have longer vertical than horizontal dimensions.
Operated by four countries and NATO, the E-3 allows radar to detect low-flying aircraft over land, a capability impossible for previous airborne radars due to an inability to discriminate aircraft from ground clutter. This technological advancement provides more accurate information, with which air operations commanders can gain and maintain control of the air battle.
The echo signal of these eight targets is superposition with ground clutter and heat noise, so the background noise and clutter is closed to the Rayleigh distribution after square law filter.
Then, the novel STAP algorithm for airborne MIMO radar is proposed to mitigate the strong ground clutter based on Temporally Correlated Multiple Sparse Bayesian Learning (TMSBL).
The bats build a mental scene with the contrasting echoes, spotting the moving vocal sac among static ground clutter, Halfwerk says.
A neural networks approach has been introduced in the marine radar application [12] for sea clutter reduction and other approaches have been successfully used in automatic radar detection in ground clutter [13, 14].
MSTAR Public Data is measured data of SAR, the clutter usually comes from grassland, forest, cities and other ground clutter which can be well fit by Weibull distribution [19].
Researchers at EADS-Cassidian rose to the challenge and the ASR-NG can now successfully eliminate the ground clutter caused by wind farms through the use of concurrent beam processing and electronic beam steering capabilities.
The reason I had difficulty spotting the SH-60 was due to ground clutter and their apparent hover.
