holding position

A specified location on the airfield, close to the active runway and identified by visual means, at which the position of a taxiing aircraft is maintained in accordance with air traffic control instructions. When transmitted by ATC (air traffic control) on the radio as “hold position,” it means that the taxiing aircraft should stop in its present position. See holding area (ii).
