Houseboat

A barge-like boat equipped for use as a domicile. Houseboats have been around since the biblical times of Noah, and many people still live on boats in many parts of the world; in the East, the Middle East, and northern Europe. In the United States they were popular in the San Francisco Bay area (1890s) and are still in wide use today in Sausalito, CA.
