in the cloud

In the cloud refers to storage or processing that takes place in a network server rather than the user's computer. Today, the cloud is typically a datacenter connected via the Internet, which is a wide area network (WAN). Before the Internet, "the cloud" referred to a company's local area network (LAN) just as often as it referred to a private or public wide area network (WAN). See cloud, cloud computing, WAN and LAN.
