inactive window

A window on screen that is not currently selected. Its title bar is typically grayed out. In Windows, pressing Alt-Tab switches between all active and inactive windows. Contrast with active window.

The windows may overlap each other, but the active window is always in the front of the inactive windows. To switch between windows, you only need to move the mouse indicator to the desired window and click the mouse making that window the active window and having it appear in the foreground.
The final touch is a tool for scrolling through the contents of inactive windows with the mouse wheel, without having to activate them: just place the mouse pointer over the required window and rotate the wheel.
