The objectives of this work were to (i) evaluate the influence of the environment (RH and temperature) on the expression of indehiscence
of Vernola grown during different seasons in southern Europe, and (ii) to examine the histological basis of partial dehiscence in capsules from normally indehiscent genotypes.
cuspidata would be hampered by a paucity of genetic variation and by anther indehiscence
as seen in one of our populations.
However, because the association of single-seededness and indehiscence
also occurs among species dispersed by animals (Casper et al.
High night temperature during a later stage of flower development can impair pod set by causing anther indehiscence
and low pollen viability (Warrag and Hall, 1984).
The [F.sub.2] segregation ratios for crosses between dehiscent and nondehiscent genotypes indicate a recessive monogenic control (4) although a partial indehiscence
has been reported for some seasons and locations.
