interacting galaxies

interacting galaxies

Two, three, or (more rarely) four or more galaxies that show signs of mutual disturbance, such as perturbed morphologies or extruded filaments of stellar material, called tidal tails, which can sometimes link to form bridges between the galaxies. Examples include the Antennae, Arp 220 and the Mice. Encounters of galaxies moving at low relative velocities are much more likely to produce mergers than fast encounters, where the interaction time is short and the galaxies pass through each other completely. The infrared satellite IRAS found that many interacting galaxies are powerful infrared sources: the interaction apparently stimulates star formation (see IRAS galaxies). There is also evidence that some radio-quiet QSO lie in interacting galaxies.

Usually, interacting galaxies connect with a bridge of gas and dust, but in this case, the merger has just begun and there is no visible link in between.
Middle: Because compact galaxy groups frequently contain closely interacting galaxies, many of the entries in the Hickson catalog can also be found in Halton Arp's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies (1966).
Our research will involve performing calculations on scales from individual GMCs to interacting galaxies, and comparing to forthcoming observations to answer some of the most fundamental questions in star formation, such as why star formation is inefficient, how do GMCs form and what are their lifetimes.

Washington, June 21 ( ANI ): The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has produced a vivid image of a pair of interacting galaxies known as Arp 142.
On a macroscopic scale, interacting galaxies often support extremely high star formation rates, leading to starbursts.
