intraframe coding

In video recording, compressing each video frame as a single entity. With intraframe coding, each frame is independent of the previous one, and although intraframe (in-tra) takes up more storage space than interframe (in-ter) coding, it allows for the most flexibility when editing the original material. Contrast with interframe coding.

Intra Vs. Inter
Intraframe coding takes up more space than interframe, but subsequent editing is much easier and delivers better results.

One technique, interframe coding, transmits only the changes in the picture from frame to frame; the other, intraframe coding concentrates on coding high-detail areas of the picture at the expense of the less detailed areas.
Since the compression is applied to each frame, irrespective of scene changes, intraframe coding is comparatively motion-independent.
Compression Labs which pioneered intraframe coding, recently developed an improved codec that uses both intraframe and interframe coding techniques.
