To develop an overall orientation index, we compute standard ranks (rank 1 for the largest value) for the five positive dimensions and inverse ranks (rank 1 for the smallest value) for the two negative dimensions.
Interpretation of [r.sub.s] = +1 is that the two samples have the same ranks, while [r.sub.s] = -1 implies that the two samples have exactly inverse ranks, and values of [r.sub.s] between -1 and +1 indicate less than perfect correlation.
