A Microsoft Windows program to display information about the the computer's Internet Protocol settings, including IP address, DHCP lease information, network card Ethernet address, and DNS information.

(Internet Protocol CONFIGuration) A command line utility that is used to display and manage the IP address assigned to the machine. In Windows, typing ipconfig without any parameters displays the computer's currently assigned IP, subnet mask and default gateway addresses.

In the Mac, ipconfig getifaddr en0 and ipconfig getifaddr en1 display the Wi-Fi and Ethernet IP addresses respectively (getifaddr stands for Get Interface Address). See IFCONFIG, NSLOOKUP and netstat.

IPconfig (and its counterpart in the Unix world ifconfig) provides useful information on Ethernet/IP interfaces that can tell the user if there is an issue with the availability of interfaces and dynamic addressing.
At the same time I am also given a 'default gateway' address--the address of the router that my laptop needs to know about in order to view the rest of your network Just type 'ipconfig -all' at a command prompt to see what I mean.
If you don't know the IP address of your AP, re-open the DOS prompt and type ipconfig and look for information on the default gateway.
TIP: If you're using an older version of Windows (such as Windows 98 or 95) you can use the graphical interface tool for ipconfig by clicking on Start > Run and typing winipcfg.
