[¦ī·sō′par·ə·fən] (organic chemistry)
A branched-chain version of a straight-chain (normal) saturated hydrocarbon; for example, isooctane, or 2,2,4-trimethyl pentane, (CH3)3C5H9, is the branched-chain version of n-octane, CH3(CH2)6CH3.
