Jungle
tree and shrub thickets combined with high, coarse-stemmed grasses. The term “jungle” is also applied to impenetrable thick forests and shrubbery entwined with woody lianas. Typical jungles are widespread in India, in the regions with a humid tropical or subtropical climate and swampy soil, such as the area along the Ganges River and the foothills of the Himalayas (the so-called Terai), as well as in Indochina and on the Sunda Islands. Secondary, or anthropogenic jungles (the result of prolonged human activity), may be found on formerly plowed land and in places where forests have been burned or cut down. Jungles are characterized by such vegetation as sal (Shorea robusta), sissoo (Dalbergia sissoo), acacia, sterculia, rattan palm, and gigantic bamboo, as well as by such tall grasses as wild sugarcane, elephant grass, and erianthus.
