Karyopyknosis
shrinkage of a cell nucleus; one of the stages of necrobiosis preceding karyorrhexis and karyolysis.
The karyopyknotic nucleus shrinks because of a loss of water. It stains more intensively with basic dyes than does the nucleus of a normally functioning cell, since the nucleic acid, which isresponsible for such staining, splits off from the nucleoproteins in the nucleus.
