In this study we examined the effect of browsing by white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) on the monocarpic perennial forb, Lactuca canadensis. Using a local population of plants growing inside and outside an experimental deer exclosure, we compared growth and reproductive output of plants that were exposed to or protected from browsing by deer.
Dominant herbaceous forbs included Cirsium discolor, Comandra umbellata, Desmodium canescens, Galium concinnum, Helianthus hirsutus, Lactuca canadensis, Solidago canadensis, and Symphyotrichum cordifolium (sagittifolium).
Native herbaceous species occurring in this meadow were Impatiens pallida, Lactuca canadensis, Laportea canadensis, Packera glabella, and Polygonum scandens.
