German Landgraf), a sovereign prince in medieval Germany.

Landgraviates were formed in the 12th century when some counts in southwestern and central Germany acquired supreme jurisdiction over territories that had included districts of several previous counts and that had not been under a duke or another prince. The most influential landgraves were those of Thuringia and Hesse.
