A
lateral line of irrigation has lateral outlets and the flow is spatially variable and permanent.
The mechanosensory system of the
lateral line in the Scorpaeniformes order, has been studied in taxa like Liparidae (Chernova & Stein, 2004; Lanoo et al., 2009), Cottidae (Jones & Jansen, 1992; Telcean et al., 2005; Coombs & Grossman, 2006), Hexagrammidae (Wonsettler & Webb, 1997) and Normanichthyidae (Mandrytsa, 1993).
Test of the mechanotactile hypothesis: neuromast morphology and response dynamics of mechanosensory
lateral line primary afferents in the stingray.
The hair cells in the
lateral line were also stained and counted at stages (1) and (3) to verify the damage and regeneration.
yunnanensis is distinguished from congeners in having the following combination of characters: skin smooth with complete
lateral line, laterosensory pores haphazardly distributed in pairs; mouth sub-terminal with upper jaw slightly longer than the lower one; lips with papillae, adipose-fin short, with a low and smooth outer edge, posterior end of which rounded and separated from dorsal procurrent rays of caudal-fin by a remarkable notch; no pinnate like rays on caudal-fin rays; body depth at anus 14.1-14.6 % SL; head length 19.9-20.4 % SL; head depth 9.9-10.1 % SL; eye to nasal barbel 9.3-10.2 % SL; caudal peduncle length 19.6-19.9 % SL; caudal peduncle depth 13.5-13.6 % SL.
Meristic traits were: the number of un-branched and branched fin rays in dorsal (D), anal (A), ventral (V), pectoral (P) and caudal (C) fins, the number of scales in
lateral line (LL), the number of scales between
lateral line and the base of the first dorsal and anal fin elements (LT).
Five specimens of the turbot from the Baltic Sea with total length between 14.0 and 31.5 cm were studied, with emphasis on the morphological variability of circuloid tubercles,
lateral line segments, swivel-joint platelets, and ultrasculpture (Figs 8-11).
Diagnosis: Dorsal rays XI,9 (1 female paratype with XI1,9); anal rays 111,9; pectoral rays 15;
lateral line scales 17+7; median predorsal scales 5; horizontal rows of scales on cheek 2; gill rakers 13-15; body depth 2.85-3.40 in SL; body width 1.95-2.15 in body depth; head length 2.75-2.90 in SL; snout length 4.1-4.4 in head length; pelvic fin short, not reaching the base of the anal fin, 4.15-4.65 in SL; caudal fin rounded to truncate in females and moderately to strongly lunate in males, caudal concavity as great as 0.8 in head; eye large, orbit diameter 3.55-3.90 in head length.
In the towns affected by the North Worcester
lateral line, community officials are working with legislators to examine options and the impact on towns from the North Worcester expansion project.
However, electricity alone was not enough: Blocking vision and
lateral line prevented sharks from striking, even when they were close enough to sense the prey's electric field.
