location services

The infrastructure that enables mobile users to identify their current physical location in the world. The GPS and cellular systems along with Wi-Fi hotspots are all used to pinpoint the longitude and latitude of the user (see mobile positioning).


The Inverted Drop Location Icon
This pin-shaped inverted drop is often used as a location icon. In Android devices (top), it is tapped to turn location services on and off. In the Regal Theater app (bottom), the icon is tapped to show nearby theaters. In contrast, Apple devices have a Location Services toggle switch in the Privacy settings.
