The underlying etiology is bowel obstruction due to atresia of the bowel, mal rotation with volvulus, intussusception, congenital bands or meconium plug syndrome as seen in cystic fibrosis.
The mildest and most common form of bowel obstruction in the newborn is meconium plug syndrome or functional colon immaturity.
The clinical course was similar in both cases; the infants were referred to intensive care units soon after birth with suspected meconium plug syndrome.
