Most lower eukaryotes, including yeast, fungi and amebas, were found to contain the less methylated Cap 0 ([m.sup.7]GpppN); higher eukaryotes, including humans, have Cap 1 ([m.sup.7][GpppN.sub.m]) and 2 ([m.sup.7][GpppN.sub.m][pN.sub.m]) in which the first and second nucleotides of mRNA are 2'-O-methylated.
