moderate turbulence

moderate turbulence

Turbulence that causes changes in altitude or attitude but in which the aircraft remains in control at all times. It also usually causes variation in IAS (indicated air speed). This could be reported as “moderate turbulence.” Moderate turbulence is also that which causes rapid bumps or jolts without appreciable changes in the aircraft altitude or attitude. This could be reported as “moderate chop.”

Weather might include IFR conditions; widespread mountain obscuration; visibility; moderate turbulence or icing; sustained surface winds above 30 knots or non-convective low-level windshear potential below 2000 feet AGL.
In this case, moderate turbulence was confirmed from pilot reports (PIREPS) and in situ eddy dissipation rate (EDR) sensors on commercial airliners at the eastern edge of the UTLS anvil.
An Airmet for moderate turbulence doesn't mean you'll encounter anything significant, but nor does it guarantee you won't run into something worse.
Moderate turbulence is enough to spill your drink, with the plane deviating by perhaps 40 feet.
Moderate Turbulence that is similar to Light Turbulence but of greater intensity.
After rotation, using the SCc to maintain an on-speed climb proved far easier than flying the mechanical airspeed indicator, which was fluctuating as much as +/-15 knots in the moderate turbulence. If you use the display as an airspeed trend indicator, you'll likely have better results getting the aircraft on speed and keeping it there.
Mishap testimony from a KC-130 pilot observer on board the King bird stated that the incident was a result of a "poor proficiency helo probe-to-drogue contact attempt" in moderate turbulence. Low helo air refueling proficiency had doomed the mission for failure, but skillful emergency procedures training helped the crews survive this mishap.
The airline said that the A340 aircraft suddenly entered in "moderate turbulence" and the captain did not get any warning from the air navigation systems in the cockpit.
The airline stated that the A340 aircraft suddenly entered in a moderate turbulence. As the skies were clear and absent of clouds, the captain did not get any warning from the air navigation systems in the cockpit of any expected turbulence.
The variation trends of the DoP of the beams with [I.sub.x]/[I.sub.y] = 1 (circularly polarized light) and [I.sub.x]/[I.sub.y] < 1 are also similar, and the variation in the DoP is clearly observable at a moderate turbulence level, in which phase perturbation is dominant.
The Sea King's crew described the weather conditions as "squally winds, which produced some moderate turbulence around the rig's helicopter landing platform".
