Monodrama

 

a drama designed to be performed by a single actor. Monodramas include the play-monologue (for example, Chekhov’s On the Harmfulness of Tobacco) and dramatic miniatures in the form of a conversation with a silent character (Briusov’s The Traveler}. The term is also applied to dramatic works having two or more characters whose roles are performed by a single actor (for example, miniatures of the Krivoe Zerkalo Theater in St. Petersburg and of the contemporary Soviet actor A. I. Raikin).

Actor-directors do not always share the interests or concerns of the academics, and certainly the fine distinctions that the latter draw between dramatic monologues and the monodrama, or between these and the dramatic lyric, mask lyric and expressive lyric, are geared more toward an experience of poetry as it is read as opposed to how it might be performed.
