nominal diameter
[′näm·ə·nəl dī′am·əd·ər] (geology)
The diameter computed for a hypothetical sphere which would have the same volume as the calculated volume for a specific sedimentary particle. Also known as equivalent diameter.

A designation used to specify the size of a pipe, bolt, rivet, reinforcing steel bar, or rod, not necessarily equal to the exact diameter.
