The data suggest the use of laboratory FLC testing for the diagnosis and monitoring of nonsecretory myeloma and AL amyloidosis, as a prognostic marker for AL amyloidosis, and as a more sensitive marker of light-chain myeloma than urine Bence Jones protein.
Information about serum FLC measurement in nonsecretory myeloma, monoclonal light chain diseases, and reference populations is reported in the literature (1-5,7), but there is limited data about FLCs in renal disease, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), and myeloma patients after autologous stem cell transplants.
The clinical application of serum free light chain measurements was particularly apparent for detecting and monitoring patients with nonsecretory myeloma and primary amyloidosis.
