Nuclide

A species of atom that is characterized by the constitution of its nucleus, in particular by its atomic number Z and its neutron number A - Z, where A is the mass number. The total number of stable nuclides is approximately 275. About a dozen radioactive nuclides are found in nature, and hundreds of others have been created artificially.

nuclide

(new -klÿd) A type of atom characterized by its atomic number and neutron number. The term ‘isotope’ is used for members of a series of atoms that have the same atomic number. ‘Nuclide’ is used for a particular species, e.g. the uranium–235 nuclide.

A species of atom characterized by the number of protons, number of neutrons, and energy content in the nucleus, or alternatively by the atomic number, mass number, and atomic mass; to be regarded as a distinct nuclide, the atom must be capable of existing for a measurable lifetime, generally greater than 10-10 second. Also known as nuclear species; species.
