occulting

A flashing light in which the periods of illumination are more clearly predominant than the periods of darkness.

But a large team of astronomers and engineers has revived a long-standing idea that might make such a mission affordable: fly an occulting mask as a separate spacecraft 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles) from the telescope.
