[′ō·shən ¦stā·shən ‚ves·əl] (naval architecture)
A vessel assigned to patrol at a specified geographical position on the ocean; such vessels are specially equipped to make comprehensive meteorological and some oceanographic observations, and to provide meteorological observations, navigation assistance, and other services to transiting aircraft.
