operationalization

operationalization

the process of defining a concept empirically so that it can be measured, and so that repeated observations can be made which are RELIABLE and VALID. Thus intelligence can be defined as what INTELLIGENCE TESTS measure (though this is not recommended), and SOCIAL CLASS can be defined in terms of occupation, income and life style. The danger, as with any attempt at QUANTIFICATION, is that much information implicit in the original concept is lost by a categorization which tends to over-simplify. Where this occurs the operationalization may not be valid. Selection of relevant measures to be included in the quantification also introduces possibility of BIAS. See also OPERATIONALISM.
