Ordonnances

cavalry companies created in 1439 (according to some sources, 1445) by an edict (ordonnance) of King Charles VII in France from local people hired by the state for permanent military service.

The ordonnances were the first permanent mercenary forces. Initially, 15 companies composed of 600 men each were formed. They were divided into 100 lances (subunits), each composed of six men: one heavily armed cuirassier (knight), three mounted archers, one sword-bearer (coutelier), and one page (servant). With the development of firearms in the second half of the 16th century, the ordonnances lost their importance.

Not only was Jodelle able to put together a complex and original spectacle in a couple of days - choosing, for instance, to expand the mascarade by adding text to a genre (supposedly) up to then mostly "muet" when it would have been much easier (and sensible), given the time allowed, to stick to well-tried practice - but he alone could fathom the awful gap between his "ordonnance" and the unfolding "execution," between his initial "invention" and "desir" and the final result.
