overlay network

A logical network that runs on top of another network. For example, peer-to-peer networks are overlay networks on the Internet. They use their own addressing system to determine how files are distributed and accessed, thus providing a layer on top of the Internet's IP addressing.

A quality of service (QoS) system is also called an overlay network, because it uses an additional addressing mechanism that may change the route normally taken in the underlying network. See also over-the-top broadcasting and over-the-top messaging.

The improved routing performance can be obtained within the overlay network by using the better topology construction.
The new AP370 and AP390 products leverage Aerohive's distributed architecture, known as its Cooperative Control architecture, which provides enterprise-class Wi-Fi without requiring a controller or overlay network. This enables 802.11ac to be deployed immediately and incrementally without needing to pay for any more equipment than is required whether that be for one or two critical areas, or across an entire campus.
Streams data about network state, including both underlay and overlay network statistics, to applications from Splunk, ExtraHop, Corvil and Riverbed.
The LTE Correlation and Multi RAT platform is based on Movik's REACH (Report, Export, Act, Control, HetNet) architecture and provides operators with deep, unified insight into the operational efficiencies of their multi RAT overlay network. Multi RAT traffic flow management and policies can now be triggered by operators in real-time, allowing subscribers to be optimally connected at anytime and anywhere.
Zentera's CoIP Cloud-Ready Enclave uses the CoIP[R] (Cloud over IP[R]) Platform, which secures application workloads in the multicloud ecosystem by connecting them through an isolated, unified, virtual overlay network, referred to as an enclave.
By using traversal path to establish the links among all the nodes in the overlay network, the redundant tree method constructs two disjoint trees [6][7], one of which is treated as the main tree distributing data from the source nodes.
A new topology display provides a complete graphical view of the entire Distrix overlay network. Through the GUI or RESTful API an expanded set of detailed operating metrics of the network can now be accessed to further automate the management of the network.
"With our Traverse platform, service providers can deliver flexible Ethernet services without having to build an overlay network, or change their current operational models.
