packet network

A network that transmits data that have been divided into small chunks (packets). Packet networks do not use circuits dedicated end-to-end for each transmission session, as packets making up a single message can travel different routes to their destination. The global standard for packet networks is IP. See IP network and packet switching. Contrast with TDM network.

"The TSoP Smart SFP[TM] processes the SONET/SDH signal with full transparency, maintaining payload structure, protection protocols and synchronization end-to-end; this simplifies the configuration and service turn-up of SONET/SDH connections across a packet network," says Pieter de Boer, Managing Director at AimValley.
With enhanced radio performance and advanced networking capabilities, the BCM85620 provides radio-optimized traffic delivery, including robust clock delivery over packet networks needed for network synchronization.
Clocks get reset in a packet network via a timestamp exchange between a master clock to one or more slave clocks.
The solutions demonstrated conformance when tested under ITU-T G.8261, a standard defining testing methodology and accuracy criteria for clock transport over packet networks. G.8261 includes network impairment scenarios to simulate more realistic network conditions.
Because T.30 was designed for circuit-switched networks, it cannot correct the delay, jitter and packet loss inherent in packet networks. While T.38 is required to implement FoIP with the reliability of TDM fax, a strong T.30 implementation is also required for reliable fax communication around the world.
Different standards groups are actively investigating synchronization in packet networks. The most relevant work is carried out in the IEEE, where a new standard is being developed based on the IEEE 1588 Standard for a Precision Clock Synchronization Protocol for Networked Measurement and Control Systems, which was finalized in 2002.
My analysis focuses on the core packet network, due to its essential role.
The next challenge for operators is to integrate the installed base of existing SONET/SDH access networks into the same packet network.
There are other implications of moving to a packet network. TDM services are tied to a very stable reference clock.
Providing real-time voice service over a packet network presents a series of challenges that are not present with "normal" data traffic.
"For Acme Communications, the MetaSwitch VP3500 provides all the traditional Class 5 features and services that customers expect along with the compelling economics, and advanced converged voice and data applications of a packet network."
CTC's Cisco Powered IP+ATM packet network and its 450 member sales and service teams, provide contiguous marketing and technology coverage throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States.
