A collection of facts, assumptions, beliefs, and heuristics that are used in combination with a database to achieve desired results, such as a diagnosis, an interpretation, or a solution to a problem.

(artificial intelligence)
A collection of knowledge expressed using some formal knowledge representation language. A knowledge base forms part of a knowledge-based system (KBS).

(1) The most common occurrence of the term is the vendor's technical support section on its website. The knowledge base includes a repository of articles and a search capability. In many cases, the content is a combination of support articles and frequently asked questions.

(2) A Web-based repository of links that define the interrelationships between the public data on the Web. See Semantic Web, virtual assistant, Wikidata, Google Knowledge Graph and DBPedia.

(3) A database of information and rules about a subject used in artificial intelligence applications. This was the first formal definition of a knowledge base. See expert system.
