(ecology)
A perennial tree or shrub with dormant buds borne on aerial shoots.

Phanerophyte

a life form of plants in which the overwintering buds are located high above the soil surface. Trees, shrubs, and woody lianas are phanerophytes. Phanerophytes are distinguished by height into microphanerophytes (2–8 m), mesopha-nerophytes (8–30 m), and megaphanerophytes (over 30 m).

Chi-Square tests indicated significant differences in the percentages of chamaephytes, therophytes and phanerophytes species between the caatinga and the cerrado, and between the caatinga and the cerrado-caatinga transition areas.
According to our findings, having some elements such as cryptophytes and phanerophytes abundantly and in high percentage reveals the characteristics of temperate forests.

Hemicryptophytes (62 taxa) and Geophytes (23 taxa) are also quite well represented, whereas Chamaephytes (12 taxa), Phanerophytes (9 taxa) and Hydrophytes (11 taxa) occur in lower percentages.
These last two, which are the most genuine deserts, show significant differences in biological types, with a greater presence of therophytes and an almost total absence of phanerophytes and chamaephytes.
The majority of taxa associated with Ageratina luciae-brauniae and/or Solidago albopilosa are phanerophytes (40%) or hemicryptophytes (36%); 2% are chamaephytes, 13% are cryptophytes, and 9% are therophytes.
Among the sampled species, 140 were considered phanerophytes, 41 hemicryptophytes, 29 camaephytes, five therophytes and three geophytes.
Vascular plants of the island mainly include therophytes (~ 62 %), hemicryptophytes (~20 %), geophytes (~9 %), chamaephytes (~5.5 %), nanophanerophytes (~2.3 %) and phanerophytes (~1.8 %).
