phase-alternation line system[′fāz ‚ȯl·tər¦nā·shən ‚līn ‚sis·təm]
A color television system used in Europe, in which the phase of the color subcarrier is changed from scanning line to scanning line, requiring transmission of a line switching signal as well as a color burst. Abbreviated PAL system.
