Plantation

A large estate or farm on which crops such as cotton, tobacco, or sugar are grown and harvested, often by resident workers. These were mostly built with slave labor and one family’s economic fortune. plantation

a large agrarian estate, usually organized on a corporate basis, producing a single crop for a large-scale market. Often the owners will have interests outside of agriculture, in industry or commerce. Plantations may be either capitalist (employing wage-labour) or noncapitalist (using nonwage labour). Major examples of the use of nonwage labour were the slave plantations of North America, Brazil and the Caribbean, producing mainly sugar and cotton, from the 17th to the 19th-century In colonial Africa and Asia, the establishment of tea and other plantations involved the colonial authorities using various forms of coercion in order to ensure a labour supply. In the 20th-century, plantations have increasingly been organized on capitalist lines with larger amounts of capital investment and relying on a small permanent labour force and salaried administrators supplemented with seasonal wage-labour mainly for harvesting. The seasonal labour may come from the locality sometimes from PEASANTS who supplement their income with plantation work, but often involves longer-distance movements. Some people move from area to area following the various seasons of harvesting. This arrangement is common in parts of the THIRD WORLD with plantations now mainly producing for export and decisions about which crops are planted being influenced by the world market and consumption in the advanced capitalist countries.
