preferred IFR routes

preferred IFR routes

Routes established between busier airports to increase system efficiency and capacity. IFR (instrument flight rules) clearances are issued on the basis of such routes except when severe weather avoidance procedures or other factors dictate otherwise. Preferred IFR routes are correlated with SID (standard instrument departures) and STAR (standard terminal arrivals) and may be defined by airways, high-level airways, direct routes between NAVAIDs (navigational aids) or waypoints, radials, DME (distance-measuring equipment) fixes, or any combination of these.

A TEC route should not be confused with Preferred IFR Routes. Descriptions of both types can be found in the back of the Chart Supplement (nee Airport/Facility Directory, or A/FD).
If not, they get a preferred IFR route. I learned this in a letter from an FAA manager covering the decommissioning of LHY and the establishment of LAAYK, its T-routes and preferred IFR routes, that's on the Teterboro Users Group web site.
