The 147-page consent decree document was filed in federal court in early January, and the city agreed to pay a $300,000 fine and spend $400,000 to help repair private sewer
lines in low-income neighborhoods.
When selectmen learned that part of Perry Place has a private sewer
line that is hooked into town sewers, board members said they would have to ask for legal advice to find out if the sewer line would become public and available to other Perry Place residents with street acceptance.
This would appear to have formally been a private sewer
serving all the houses in the run before connecting to the public sewer in the road.
Drains between individual properties and the private sewer
remain private and the responsibility of the individual owner.
A spokesman said: "Following receipt of a complaint regarding a blocked private sewer
in Beverley Drive, statutory notices were served on the 11 properties affected giving them 21 days to resolve the problem.
Last Saturday, Yorkshire Water adopted almost 14,000 miles (22,000 km) of private sewer
pipes after new Government legislation came into force.
The cost to private sewer
owners of these repairs is estimated at pounds 221m each year.

or water main is subject to an adoption agreement.
