When viewed laterally, the rostral edge of each squamosal articulates with the quadratojugal and with the caudomedial edge of the quadrate bone (Figures 1A and B).
Quadratojugal (Qj): viewed dorsally, the quadratojugal forms the dorsolateral wall of the temporal fossa.
In lateral view, the dorsal edge of the quadrate bone articulates with the lateral edge of the quadratojugal (Figures 1A and B).
the frontal, jugal, postorbital, parietal, premaxilla, and prefrontal (Figure 3), followed by the palatine and quadratojugal in stage 19, and lastly by the vomer in stage 25 (Figure 3).
The two parts of the parietals proceed in the medial direction to posterior fusion, approaching the quadratojugal laterally and the supraoccipital caudally.
In stage 25, the frontal approaches the prefrontal, while the jugal approaches the postorbital, maxilla, quadratojugal and the parietal.
The lateral temporal region is slightly damaged in PIN 4659/1 but there appears to be an emargination between the jugal and the quadratojugal (Fig.
Maxilla and quadratojugal separated or in contact (22)
Tsuji (2006) scored the maxilla and the quadratojugal as being in contact in Nyctiphruretus based on illustrations of Ivakhnenko (1979) and Lee (1995, 1997), when in fact they are not due to a temporal emargination between the quadratojugal and the jugal (Fig.
Quadratojugal lateral temporal fenestra contribution (32)
Tsuji (2006) took this character from the analysis of deBraga and Reisz (1996), where only lanthanosuchids were scored as having a quadratojugal that contributed to the lateral temporal fenestra.
Squamosal delicate; anterior arm slender; posterior arm three fifths length of anterior arm, medial ala overlying dorsolateral surface of crista parotica; ventral arm well developed, distally articulating with quadratojugal laterally and posterior ramus of pterygoid medially.
